Abstract:

Everyone knows the saying that one person’s “freedom fighters” are another person’s “terrorists”. During the Second World War, for example, those French people who called themselves “rĂ©sistants” were called “terrorists” by the Vichy government and occupation authorities. This normative use of the word “terrorism” poses a problem for the social sciences, but does this mean that they cannot (scientifically) study terrorism?
