Abstract:This paper investigates how Western airmen make sense to the act of killiing in the context of asymetric warfare, i.e. in this context when the logic of self defense and self sacrifice cannot apply. The paper, based on 40 interviews with airmen, argues that the “new Western way of war” (M. Shaw) provides Western airmen with a new military ethos based on the notion of humanitarian violence.
